This is a magnificent arch which was built for the Barcelona World Fair that took place in 1888 in Citadel Park. Triumphal arch was located at the end of the wide boulevard and was the main access gate to the exhibition. The designer of this building was Catalan architect and artist Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas.

Triumphal arch in Barcelona differs from other famous arches, namely from Triumphal arch in Paris because of its multicolored brick in Mudejar style which stems from Moresque architecture.

The arch is 30 meters high and is abundantly decorated on every side with rock imagery and ceramic tiles. The front friso by Josep Reines depicts how Barcelona welcomes visitors. The other side designed by Josep Limona shows the prize-giving ceremony. The right friso created by Antonio Villanova symbolizes industry, trade and agriculture whereas the left friso by Torquato Tasso represents trade and art. From above the arch is decorated with national emblem of Spain, carved in stone. Two roaring lions frame the crowned emblem. Lower, along the contour of the arch, emblems of all provinces are depicted. The central one which represents Barcelona is much bigger than the others. The arch is also decorated with twelve allegoric statues of women who symbolize glory.

Triumphal arch is located at Passeig de Lluís Company and you can easily get there by subway (stop “Triumphal Arch”). It will also take you a few minutes to walk from the arch to Citadel Park.
